The journey starts Monday, April 10, 2023.
Rio’s water broke at about 9:30. We talked with Rio’s vet and she gave us some encouragement and advice. After an hour+ of rough labor, Rio gives birth to a still born puppy. A beautiful female. We try everything to resuscitate the puppy, but no.
Our attention then turn’s back Rio. Rio still has a second puppy in her. No labor, just puffing from being hot. After calls to several Emergency Veterinary Services and no labor for about 4 hours, we decide to take in to an emergency veterinary service. Eau Claire (30 min East), Hudson (45 min west), Woodbury (60 min west), and several others are full or vets getting off 12-hour shifts, we head to the University of Minnesota Emergency Veterinary Service (75 min west).
Upon arriving at the UofM, we check Rio in, fill in paper work for about 15 min), and they take our girl in back. We are hoping and praying our girl is OK. Assuming the worst, we hope our little girl Rio will be the same after the emergency c-section. We wait about 15 min and the vet comes to talk with us in a family waiting room. The vet informs us that Rio after short labor and a healthy baby girl.
What a surprise and relief.
After a follow-up x-ray and some test, both Rio and baby are brought to our room to hopefully get the puppy to nurse on Rio. We work with Rio and the puppy about an hour and head home with the newest member of our family.
